My students live in a high poverty area (74%) and may lack some of the basic necessities most people take for granted, but they are blessed with a wealth of curiosity and initiative.
Like most innate learners, my students are truly engaged when they have access to hands-on materials and work in small group settings.
Reluctant learners come alive in the Makerspace area of my library.
Our school is in a small fishing community that has struggled since Hurricane Katrina and the BP Oil Spill. Many traditional family jobs ceased to exist after these disasters. Furthermore, we host a transient culture along with a population of students learning our language and traditions for the first time. It's time all of my students get to see the possibilities.
My Project
The Maker Space in my media center provides diverse learners from various socioeconomic backgrounds the opportunity to learn through play. Students will delve deeper into the importance of settings from around the world when they are able to see themselves there.
I cannot wait to see their writings come alive when they transport themselves using green screen technology.
My students will be able to walk in front of the Colosseum or join troops on D-Day.
When creating the setting for stories they read and write, students see the relevance of their efforts. With the capabilities of green screening apps and these new green screen sets, my students' imaginations will know no limits.
