Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The first day my students walk into my class they are excited, a little timid, and full of energy! They are wonderful 4 and 5 yr old little boys and girls who are from lower income families that usually do not speak English. Our school community is made up of individuals from all around the world, and for most of the families, my class is their first experience with the educational system of the United States. That said, I strive to create the best, most welcoming environment for the students and their families! It is very important to bridge the gap between the school and the students' families in order to start the children on a path of life long learning!

Our school is a Title I school where all of the students receive free breakfast and lunch daily.

For my class there is also a snack provided to all of the students at no cost. Because the majority of my students and their families do not speak English, I work at finding ways to successfully communicate with the families and make them feel comfortable so they will be involved in their child's education.

My Project

My school recently adopted a new curriculum for our Pre-K classrooms designed to meet the students where they are, and expose them to a variety of experiences from their everyday lives to help them learn and grow. Through exploring naturally occurring items in their daily life, such as building waterways and animals, exploring natural wood treasures, naturally occurring agate slices, and others, students are learning mathematical concepts, and developing their scientific thinking, all while being exposed to language and literature.

STEAM, science, technology, engineering, arts and math will be the focused areas of instruction for the students exploration of these donated materials.

By exploring all areas, and using basic items, I will allow the children to see the wonder all around them. I will capitalize on their innate inquisitiveness and and guide their curiosity to the areas in which they need to develop a basic understanding of all school and education related items to foster a natural love of learning.
