Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In 1864 in the midst of the Civil War President Abraham Lincoln founded the National Academy of Science to add “the fuel of interest to the fire of genius in the discovery...of new and useful things.” I would like to continue in that tradition by creating a maker space in our Library Learning Lab.

I am the Information Literacy Specialist (librarian) for an incredible group of kids in an inner city school in one of America's largest cities.

We are an economically disadvantaged school, and 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. My kids are tough, smart, funny, and amazing learners. They constantly amaze me with their insight and unique viewpoints on life and the world around them. Our campus is part of the International Baccalaureate Program, and our focus is making sure that our students are developing the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills needed to live, learn and work in a rapidly globalizing world

My Project

My students will use the materials in Maker Spaces that will be coordinated into our library throughout the school year in our library's Learning Lab. Students will use the Makey Makey to turn every day objects into touch pads; bananas will become keyboards, and paintings created with conductive paint will become pianos. Makey Makeys are essentially beginner invention kits, that will allow students to create, invent, and become engineers. The Virtual Reality headsets will help students tour locations they have never had an opportunity to visit, perhaps a museum in another country and even under the sea. Ozobot it a programmable robot that will allow students to create computer code in an engaging manner by confusing them into thinking they're having fun instead of learning. The Hue Animation kits will help our animation students create their own stop motion films at school.

Maker spaced education appeals to kids everywhere on the learning spectrum.

Failing? That's okay. This is the one time at school kids will know it's okay to fail. Why is failing okay? That's how we learn. Failing leads us to developing good problem solving skills. The goal is for us to move from just 'making' things and following directions to becoming 'tinkerers'- playing, experimenting, and creating. You can help my students become the inventors and creators of tomorrow
