Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the center of a vibrant neighborhood, our school is a dynamic learning community for diverse learners. It is a dual-language International school located in southwest Seattle. With 73.9% of students receiving free or reduced lunch, our school is classified as Title I. Unfortunately, as a low income community, our school has been historically under served. However, Seattle Public Schools are making a concerted effort to close opportunity gaps and provide students with the resources and creative opportunities that they need to succeed.

This is the first year that our school has a full time music program.

Such an experience can open up a whole world to young learners. Students are being given “the tools to express themselves and their ideas, and creative outlets to share their viewpoints with the world.”

Our students bring a myriad of unique perspectives that inspire me to be a better educator. We have a diverse student body from unique cultures and backgrounds that make us stronger as a community.

My Project

Students in elementary school have the opportunity to learn about music and most often end up performing songs that were written by others. Using Orff xylophones and metallophones, students have an accessible way to compose their own music. Using the Orff-Schulwerk teaching pedagogy, students are encouraged to think creatively, to compose and create!

Xylophones are a way to access a whole world of repertoire and build creative composition skills.

Students will compose songs, exploring the creative process. Using Xylophones, students will learn to brain storm, develop musical ideas, work collaboratively, give and receive feedback, and refine musical compositions. Xylophones are an excellent platform for musical compositions.

Additionally, xylophones open up the possibility of performing various world musics. With the additional xylophones, we will be able to play arrangements of songs from West Africa, East Asia, Latin America, Europe and much more.
