This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a second grade teacher at a California Distinguished School located in an urban community. Our school services approximately 400 students, all of which receive free lunches. Most of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds, foster care, or reside with legal guardians. The student demographic is composed of about 70.1% Hispanic, 29.2% African American, and 0.5 % other. The school population consists of 91.3% socially disadvantaged, 60% English Learners, and 5% Students with Disabilities.
We recently became a Distinguished School and have continuously grown academically, but with that came some disadvantages. We no longer receive enough money in our budget to pay for things other than books. Our students are finally reading and doing math like they should and now have time to experiment with science. How can we inspire future scientist if we can't afford to buy the proper tools to do so.
My classroom needs ten microscopes. Being able to use these tools will give my students the inspiration necessary to spark an interest in learning science. This will expose my students to activities they have never had the opportunity to participate in.
You have the power to inspire my students to become our future scientists. Can you image a world with no one to find cures for diseases or come up with new medicines? I know I can't, so please help us. Your donation will make a world of difference.
