My Students
Our city's schools officially closed March 17th, 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The closure was extremely abrupt. No one was prepared for the schools to be closed for the remainder of the year. Our classrooms have been left as they were on that last day; full of tools and supplies that enhance teaching and learning. Unfortunately, schools will remain closed through November. Students will be able to connect with their teachers and classmates virtually using devices provided by the school or their families.
We want all of our students to have the materials to engage in hands-on activities that are developmentally appropriate and engaging.
This past spring I created bags for my then preschoolers. They will use those materials for creating and learning in kindergarten. I want to provide access to these great materials for my incoming students as well.
Our families have a variety of needs; some desire more virtual resources and activities to keep their young children engaged and learning, others need additional basic supplies to continue the play-based learning that occurs in the physical classroom.
My Project
As we jump into another season of remote home learning with our youngest learners, we are reminded of moments we have left behind in the physical classroom. One of my fondest memories is of a reluctant and shy student who would gravitate daily to the magnetic tiles during open play. His earliest connections with his classmates and teachers occurred around a set of PicassoTiles and served as a foundation for future learning.
Magnetic 3D tiles are the perfect open-ended tool for students to create and amaze with.
Not only are the PicassoTiles super fun for children and adults alike, but they provide a myriad of learning opportunities within various curricular areas including mathematics, art, engineering, and design.
Students will be able to use the magnetic tiles with their magnetic whiteboards during virtual lessons to demonstrate shape and pattern learning. They will also be able to use the magnetic tiles in unstructured play with their classmates and caregivers. Students will make virtual connections as they share their creations with their peers. Providing all of my students with this amazing gift would contribute to community building and establishing a common experience for all members of the class.
