Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

The students at our high school have requested a sensory room to help them regulate their feelings. This is a place for them to go when they need to calm down before returning to class. Everyone knows that high school can be a stressful and loud place. These students want to have a safe place to work out their emotions so they can focus and learn more after. Sensory rooms have been found to provide just that type of space for our students with disabilities and would be a great part of our special education program.

Our hope is to create a soothing and relaxing environment with essential items such as a a ball pit with balls, teepee, pop together beads, light up and glow in the dark items, bubble tube, curtains to create a multisensory space, to promote relaxation and clear the mind for our high school students with disabilities.

In Their Own Words

Our goal is to create a calming sensory room for our high school students with disabilities. We want to have a safe place were we can go when school is too overwhelming for us. Our hope is that many students will benefit from this room for many years to come.

With the specified items we will design and decorate our Calm Room. We will allow all students with disabilities to use this room to help them cope with school stressors. The room will have dim lights, peaceful music and lots of sensory items to help us to return to our class. This will make me a leader to my classmates.

School can be a very overwhelming and confusing place. The Calming Room is important to us because it will give us a place to be while we calm ourselves and get ready to return to the classroom. This room solves the problem of not having anywhere to go when we are feeling overwhelmed. The school special ed program would really benefit from having this available for the students.
