Help me give my students access to Ray Bradbury's dystopian novel that stresses the dangers of willful ignorance and the censorship of knowledge. This novel is more relevant today than ever before.

My Project

I am requesting 45 copies of Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. This novel is imperative in today's high school English classroom. Students are turning into the kids in the novel who are waiting to be entertained for hours and then race from place to place without ever stopping to think, create, and wonder why life is the way it is. Unhappiness is prevalent, people are scared, and there are threats against literacy, thought, and war every day.

My classroom is a place where we can discuss the characters and society in the novel and allow comparisons to be made to this dystopian society to our own.

This is a goal of teaching this novel. Students can explore and reflect through reading Bradbury's novel. They can decide for themselves what choices they want to make when it comes to engrossing themselves in too much technology and social control and not enough free-thought.

Using Fahrenheit 451 with 10th graders is special because they're emerging into adulthood. They're beginning to form their own thoughts and understandings about the world. They like to challenge their ideas against one another. They are excited learn about these characters, form opinions about them, and then reflect upon how it relates to their own views on the world.

My school has some copies, but we have a limited number, and our state has decided to stop charging textbook rental fees, so this has put a strain on buying new copies when old ones become lost or damaged. We are in need of replacing these lost and damaged books to keep the spark alive for Bradbury's timeless classic!
