My students need motivational posters, lamps, beanbag chairs, binders, post-its, pens and highlighters to set up our new reading intervention room for struggling readers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In January of 2016, a select group of 9th graders with reading skills several years behind their peers will be enrolled in a new reading intervention program. We are building a specialized classroom environment for these struggling students to encourage and motivate them as they learn to read.
As one of the most diverse high schools in Baltimore City, we work with a wide variety of students with different backgrounds and different needs.
Some of our students are refugees who have missed years of formal schooling. Some of our students come from educational backgrounds where they have spent a year or more with long-term substitute teachers. Many have gaps in their learning. We are implementing a new reading intervention program in January 2016 to help those students catch up to their peers.
My Project
Imagine being a struggling reader at 14-16 years old. Imagine having your class schedule shuffled mid-year because you have been identified as needing an intervention to help you become a better reader. You might feel embarrassed or nervous about being singled out for an intervention like this. Now imagine that, when you walk into that reading classroom, you are met by smiling teachers who have worked hard to provide a comfortable environment where you can focus on learning. There are motivational posters lining the walls, a cozy reading corner with a carpet and beanbag chairs for your independent reading and organized binders and supplies with your name on them ready for you to use. Walking into that classroom environment, created with the supplies we are requesting here, will make our students comfortable enough to focus on improving their reading skills. This classroom environment will provide the setting for students to take full advantage of this opportunity to improve themselves.
Reading is the foundation of all learning beyond elementary school.
Being a teenager who can't read fluently isn't easy. We are building a reading intervention classroom for these struggling students from scratch in a dilapidated old school building that is currently very bleak. With your help, we can welcome them into a warm, inviting classroom environment where they will have the tools to focus on improving their reading. Through improving their reading, they can improve their chances in life!
