Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As part of our 6th grade curriculum, students are engaging in a hands-on photography unit designed to build both technical skills and creative expression. My classroom includes a wonderfully diverse group of learners with a wide range of interests, backgrounds, and learning styles. To ensure every student can access this learning experience meaningfully, I am requesting photography backdrops, green screens, and APPL boxes—each of which plays a critical role in our lessons.
Photography backdrops allow students to explore visual storytelling while gaining control over their subject’s environment.
Backdrops remove distractions and give students a consistent background to work with, helping them focus on lighting, framing, and composition. Having access to multiple colors and textures allows students to match the mood of their story or highlight the subject in unique ways. This fosters artistic decision-making and builds visual literacy.
Green screens open up an exciting world of digital creativity. With green screen technology, students can learn how to use chroma key editing to place their subject in virtually any location—whether it's the surface of the moon, the Great Wall of China, or underwater. This is especially valuable for students with limited mobility or those who want to tell stories beyond their physical environment. It also introduces key digital media concepts, such as layering and background replacement.
APPL boxes are simple but powerful tools in a student photography studio. These sturdy wooden boxes help adjust the height of subjects, support equipment, or serve as platforms for photographers to achieve better angles.
By equipping our classroom with these resources, we can give every student—from aspiring directors to shy portrait artists—the tools to bring their vision to life. These items are not just supplies—they are gateways to creativity, confidence, and 21st-century skill development.
