Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.- Picasso I teach First Grade at a Title I school in a high poverty area. Art is the last thing that my students have a chance to be involved in,

Because of budget cuts in our district, there is no money for the arts. I once read that you can tell a lot about a society by the emphasis it places on the arts. I want to place more emphasis on art and enrich my students lives. Education in the arts helps in many other aspects of academics. Critical thinking, math, spacial relationships, writing, and observation skills are just a few of the skills that students learn in art classes. Of course there is the love and appreciation of art itself which last a lifetime. My students do not get the chance to explore or create art. I want to give them this opportunity.

In order to teach my students, I need the basic supplies- paint, canvas boards, and prints to teach them about famous artists and use as examples. I want to be able to enrich their lives with art. One of the first lessons that I would teach my students is about color and how color can be used to express emotion. I have several students with emotional problem and I think that this would be a good way for them to express themselves. I would also use this as a jumping off point to create a writing piece. I would have students write about what they painted and how it makes them feel. As my students develop as artists I would explore different techniques and medias.

With your help I will be able to give my students a chance to explore art and discover a part of themselves that they might not get to a chance to. My students deserve to experience what many people take for granite, a chance to enjoy the arts.
