Create a Library Maker Space for Military Kids

My students need 6 Lego kits, tiles and bases including 2 character sets; 14 books about creativity including the Lego Ideas book; and storage/shelving.

My Students

Some wise person once that imagination is the beginning of creation. Well, my students have an abundance of imagination but very little opportunity to create. That needs to change.

We are located near two military bases, and many of my students are the children of deployed military personnel.

My students are racially and ethnically diverse--39% Anglo; 14% African American/Black; 16% Alaskan Native and American Indian; 7% Asian; 6% Hispanic; 3% Filipino; 15% multiracial. Ten percent are in bilingual/bi-cultural programs or ELL. Over 60% of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast/lunch but we are not a Title I school. We have all the needs but none of the resources of other economically depressed schools. Although they represent the very best in America, many students do not have the funds for frills like books or games. They love coming to the library where they can explore, create and learn new things. The Library Creative Maker Space needs more materials, especially Legos, but our school does not have the funds to stock it.

My Project

My military students are trying to fit into our school community. They are wonderfully creative individuals and need to harness that creativity. This project will breathe new life into an old library by stocking an inviting, welcoming Creative Maker Space with materials that stimulate creativity. I am requesting sets of Legos, books about creativity and some storage. These materials will be housed in the Library Creative Maker Space. All students will have access to the Legos but I plan to teach fifth graders how to make stop-action movies with the Legos. Students will design and make backgrounds, write scripts, learn how to storyboard, and then shoot and edit the film using Lego characters. Films will be shared with other students. Right now, the library is filled with K-6 students who come in to check out books or use the computers but this project would add another dimension to the library program. These materials will inspire students to become creators and problem solvers.

My students desperately need to develop their creativity.

They need a few Legos and Lego character sets, some inspirational books and storage. Instead of being passive consumers of information, my students will learn the skills to become creative digital storytellers. The materials from this grant will enable them to take the first steps toward becoming creative problem solvers and film makers. We virtually no money for this project and we need the help of donors.
