My students need hardware and construction tools for designing, building and testing engineering design challenges.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Wood's classroom raised $472

My Students
My students are an exciting bunch. They are a large group of 4th and 5th graders who love to learn and are opinionated, insightful and clever. They are game for anything, especially hands-on challenges that they can work on together. When they have explored a concept deeply and have discovered something new, they glow with pride because they know they have done something hard- and doing hard things is worth it!
They are compassionate and kind- they excel at helping others and take a lot of pride in being leaders who can share their knowledge and expertise.
Jesse Jackson said, “You can’t teach what you don’t know, and you can’t lead where you won’t go!” I'd love to provide my kids with as many opportunities to be the capable leaders they are so they can be confident as they progress through school, and successful as adults in the 21st Century.
My Project
In our 4th and 5th grade classes, we study a variety of science concepts, some more abstract than others. Particularly difficult to understand are topics surrounding matter, energy transformation, sound, and light. In order to make these ideas more concrete, and to invest students' hearts and minds in their learning, I would like for them to be able to conceptualize, design and build solutions to problems they decide need to be addressed in their school and community.
To be able to do this safely and to the best of their ability, I am requesting a starter kit of tools they can use for their constructions.
These will be used in class and after school to measure and build projects that strengthen their understanding of difficult science concepts. Once the students feel confident in their tool use, they will then teach lower grade students how to use the tools to solve their own design challenges. This will allow our older students to build leadership skills and show compassion for younger students as they pass on their knowledge and skills.
As students on each grade level become more confident in their problem-solving skills and strengthening their core science and math knowledge, they will be able to show the individual gains they have made by increasing their pass rates on project-based assessments, benchmarks, and State Standards of Learning end-of-year exams. The impact of student-led transmission of skills will be evaluated by assessing the number of skilled tool users who enter into the upper grades.
