This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Knowledge is power". By working and playing together they are active participants in the learning process. I am hoping to help the children develop social/personal skills ----give them opportunity for social play independent of my other learning centers.

I work at a Title 1 school.

I have many ELL students that are lacking the skills to communicate in English. I am teaching my 11th year. I have developed and practiced with multiple learning centers and I am very happy with most of them. However, my classroom is "bare bones"---it was converted this year from a music room and lacks what I consider basic needs for a kindergarten---for example: color block rug, kitchen area, & cassette player. I want the room to look warm and inviting and be somewhere that the students can be safe and at the same time be excited to learn. Our kindergarten team is cohesive and willing to share but no other teachers have extras of these items.

My Project

With the resources I am asking for in this project, I hope to increase the amount of oral language used in my classroom. I want my students to feel comfortable with each other and be in a safe environment where it is okay to make mistakes without the worry of what others may think. I want them to be able to share their ideas with each other and to teach one another. I want them to be able to hear enough English vocabulary through books on tapes or music that they will feel comfortable using oral language. A cassette player is a must in a classroom. In our oral block of time, having the kitchen equipment will allow the children to interact in a familiar environment. They can cook, eat, talk---just like they hopefully do at home with a family. A color block rug teaches personal space and helps with behavior management. Each child knows where he/she should be and it can easily be identified if they are where they should be....or not.

My students have the opportunity to come to school and learn from each other.

Contributions to this project will enhance their learning because it will give them the tools to use their language and skills. Being a Kindergarten teacher I know that I need to instill a LOVE for learning right now and help them see the value of a good education. These tools will help listening, social interaction, role playing, behavior management, and add color and warmth to their environment.
