My Students

I teach music through a grant program that integrates core subjects into the arts. On any given day, I see grades K-6 walk through my classroom, where we explore the world, language, math, and sciences through music.

My school is located in a suburb of SaIt Lake City.

It is new, and the students and teachers have settled and created a thriving school community. I teach the whole school of over 1,100 students every week. They are very eager to learn and enjoy the integrated music lessons. They know that in my class, even if they don't particularly care for music, they will learn something new from a subject they enjoy; whether it is language arts, social studies, math, or science. Every day they give me fun stories to take home and share, and I look forward to going to work every day because of them.

My Project

My 6th graders have long missed out on opportunities brought to our school. It seems that every year new equipment was purchased for the grade they just left. In, my classroom this is true as well. These Meinl cajons are a natural next step in developing my music program, and the perfect instrument to take my 6th grade curriculum to the next level.

These cajons will help my students create independent performing ensembles.

In previous school years, my 6th graders formed folk bands, played two folk songs and one technical piece as their final project. All four students in each group played on a soprano ukulele and sang. This year I would like to change that, so they know what a 4 piece rock band feels like. Two students would still play ukuleles, one student would play on recently donated baritone ukuleles, and if possible the 4th would be the drummer on a cajon. These folk drums are a drum set in a box. They would help with diversifying learning and give my students opportunities not currently available. All students will get to use and play the instruments. The cajons will also propel my program to the next level. I also want my students to see that I care about investing in them just as much as any other grade.
