Crazy, Creative Embroidery!

My students need fabric, sewing supplies, embroidery floss and dyes, and batting to each make a wall hanging designed and created by them.

My Students

Our students are from a variety of ethnic and economic backgrounds. Students speak many languages, from Spanish to Arabic to English. We are a small K-8 school in a high poverty district with more than 60% free or reduced lunch. We have limited resources available and rely on DonorsChoose.org for a lot of our supplies. Technology is a priority for our Middle School students, with the focus on introducing new things.

My students are excited to learn about technology.

Hands-on activities are the most popular, and everyone does their best.

My Project

My students will dye their own embroidery floss in wildly exotic colors and patterns. They will then create an organic design that will be traced on the interfacing. The interfacing then sandwiches the batting with the batik fabric and the students use sewing machines to sew their designs. After this, we will use the stitching lines to begin the embroidery. We do not have a budget for some after school classes such as sewing, so we scrape together supplies.

This project will teach many things.

Creating a design, using a sewing machine to sew a straight line, embroidery, and color theory. It will also foster creativity and self-confidence.
