My students need an aquarium habitat for a terrestrial animal to learn about inherited traits, learned behaviors, and to compare animals to themselves.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Ewe! Yuck! Gross! This is what I often hear when I introduce my students to new things. I would like to foster an environment that will introduce students to the unknown in a nurturing environment.
100% of our students are an ethnic minority and qualify for free lunch.
Most have never been exposed to living things other than dogs. The students range in age from 6 to 13. Very few actually have a solid foundation in life science. As a school, we are working to ensure that our students are well rounded.
My Project
I have requested an aquarium habitat for a terrestrial animal so my students can learn about inherited traits, learned behaviors, and to compare animals to themselves. My students will begin to understand more and fear less the unknown.
By starting with a creature such as the hermit crab, students will want to learn more. The hermit crab has eyes and legs just like they do. We will begin with the familiar and venture out into the unknown.
This project is important because it will expand my students' knowledge of the world around them.
I hope to groom a cadre of students who are equipped to explore the world all around them and beyond.
