Help me give my students the basic tools for the beginning of the year. My students need twistable crayons that include all the colors they need to create masterpieces.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a large urban area where the majority of my students are part of the free lunch program and come from low socio-economic home environments. Having money for food and other household expenses takes priority over buying learning games, books, or technology. This is my Kindergarten students' first school experience. I want them to develop a love for reading and learning, and depending on the pandemic, I may be teaching in person or virtually.
Due to the pandemic, many of my students did not attend pre-school or did so virtually, so I need many resources to help them in reading and writing that will be engaging.
Every year, my Kindergarten students always come excited to class, and this year they may be more apprehensive. I want them to feel safe and have a positive mindset to begin learning the love of reading and writing.
My Project
What child does not enjoy getting a new pack of crayons at the beginning of the school year? I'm sure my new Kindergarten students will be blown away to receive not only crayons but twistable crayons!
Every school year my Kindergarten kids say, "I need pink and gray!" because the 8 pack of crayons they get for the year don't come with those colors.
It is frustrating to them when they want to color an elephant, flowers, hearts, and our gray dolphin mascot and we don't have those colors.
I don't want them to be confined to only 8 colors all year and hinder their creativity. I want them to have the resources to be able to focus on their social emotional well being as they draw what they feel and not be focused on the colors they are missing.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
