My 21 first graders or firsties as I call them are English language learners who enjoy listening to stories, but also want to read them. They have the potential to be very successful readers if they have more sight word practice and are read to more in English. The majority of my students have parents who do not speak English and do not get read to at home. They mainly get to listen to stories and practice reading words at school only. Our school currently lacks the technology in our primary classrooms that would expose our students to listen to stories online/CD or sight word practice.
