Crayons and Other Classroom Basics

My Students

Aloha from na keiki o Hawai'i. My preschool special education class provides early intervention services to qualifying special needs children with a range of disabling conditions, ages 3 to 5 years. My school is located in a predominantly rural, low-income neighborhood with a considerable portion of the children of Hawaiian and/or Pacific Island ancestry.

Our classroom cheer sums it up: "You too, we too, we all love preschool!" We are a group of actively involved adults-teacher, aide, and therapists, and children working together in our hands-on learning environment.

My Project

In addition to working with my preschool special ed students, I teach in an after school inclusion program with K-3 kids, and everyone wants to draw rainbows (Maybe it's because we've been getting a lot of rain recently.) My supply of old markers has dried up, and, I realize, there comes a point when markers are worn out and need to be tossed. In addition to markers, I would also like to offer rich oil pastels to expand their media exposure when they draw those rainbows and other pictures.

In my class, bandaids are also basic.

It's life--little kids fall and skin knees and elbows and pick at scabs from mosquito bites. We need a resupply of bandaids to keep the bloody scratches covered.
