My students need crash cymbals at multiple schools so they can learn how to properly play the instrument, and to experience what it's like being in a full percussion section!
The students I serve belong to several urban elementary schools in the Manchester School District, as well as one high school. The elementary students are first-year band students learning to play an instrument for the first time, and the high school students are part of a 90-member marching/concert band. The Manchester School District is the largest and oldest public school system in New Hampshire. Students from these schools represent over 65 countries with 85 different languages spoken, and some students are experiencing the educational process for the first time.
The Manchester School District is a true example of diversity.
The performing arts are a great way to bring our diverse population together as a unified student body. The performing arts provide students with leadership opportunities, as well as the chance to display their talents, thereby promoting their success.
My Project
These crash cymbals will allow percussion students expand their knowledge and skills on percussion instruments. They are currently limited to playing on just the snare drum and the bells. However, percussionists are required to be able to play a vast array of instruments as they become more skilled. Acquiring these crash cymbals is the first step towards giving beginning band students in Manchester the opportunity to perform on as many of the percussion instruments as they possibly can.
Young students feel empowered when they are given a special task to complete.
The percussion section of a band is made up of students who have been given a specific role to play. One student might be the snare drummer. Another might be the bass drummer. And another might be the cymbalist! Each is responsible for fulfilling their role. The more individual tasks we can give students, the more responsibility and empowerment we bestow upon them. These cymbals are one small piece of a larger picture of student leadership and responsibility.
