This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In north Florida, there is a small town with a small school and a classroom teacher who has big dreams. I dream that all children will love music; that every child who comes into my class will embrace music in all of its forms and sit down wanting to learn.

These children are smart, creative and resilient and I am trying to expand their lives through music.

Many of them come from homes where finances are tight. 100% of students are able to eat a free breakfast and lunch at school every day due to the county's socioeconomic status. In the last year our students have suffered catastrophic losses due to Hurricane Michael and even over 6 months later we are still dealing with the damage in our community. The availability of educational music instruction to most of these students is limited to thirty minutes in class once a week. Students from kindergarten to fifth grade are sharing all instruments and books that are available to them in class. This is why I am striving to bring instruments, music, and resources to these students, so all of their talents can be utilized.

My Project

This year our small beginner band has almost doubled in size! I am hoping that with this growth we will be able to recruit some new percussion players. Hopefully with new instruments and proper instrument stands we can reduce wear and tear on what we have now and add to our inventory for the increase in students joining band.

Without a great percussion section band music is lacking the drive, rhythm and beat we all love to tap our foot to.

I have chosen a bass stand to hold our current bass drum. This drum is very old and has been used for many years. The wear and tear is showing and hopefully by using the proper stand we can hold on to it for a few more years. I have also added a new set of cymbals to replace to old cymbals which are no longer able to be used properly. With an increase in students we will also need a new drum set so that all students are able to perform together. This new drum set includes a xylophone as well. These instruments are important to complete our percussion section and fill out the sound of our band.
