Help me give my students Freddie the Frog books to supplement our music curriculum. Anytime we can demonstrate for our students that reading is fun and exciting is a win in my book, and these books do that.

My Students

As an itinerant music specialist, I teach music to PreK through 5th grade, in four Title I schools a year. Since many of my sweet students struggle with reading (many are Tier III readers), I incorporate as many Accelerated Reading books in my lessons as possible. We sing parts of the books, play instruments while reading them, or create body percussion as accompaniment.

Creative, energetic, and inquisitive, my students enjoy learning how to add drama and sound effects to a book.

The fact that we are reading, as well as covering music standards, means nothing compared to the fun they are having.

My Project

My lower elementary students are just learning to read independently, and the more they are read to, the more encouragement they will receive to continue trying on their own. The music-themed books that I have selected are meant to supplement our curriculum in a fun-filled, creative manner. Most of these books are not the typical books that one would find in a school library.

Hands-on, curious, and energetic: my young students thrive on being challenged to do more, to think 'outside the box'.

The students actively participate in the reading of the books, many times changing instruments on the second reading, then discussing the main elements at the end. When applicable, the students take an Accelerated Reader test for their classroom teacher. This is a high-energy, exciting way for my students to learn about key musical concepts, and experience the joy of reading.
