This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a STEM magnet school, my students are bused in from locations all over the city. Many of my students catch the school bus before their peers would even imagine waking up. They do this to be part of the unique opportunity offered at my school. My students know that the great education they receive is their first step toward changing the world they live in.

Minority students from all measured groups at my school score proficient at a rate more than 50% above the state average in English, more than 40% above in math, and more than 40% above in science.

My school provides an opportunity for students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) to engage in two years of rigorous coursework exploring STEM. Before you think my school is one set aside for the "privileged", please know that my campus is classified as a highest poverty school. It is not a school for the privileged, but it is a school for the dedicated. My school is a school for students who are willing to work for something more, and shatter the achievement gap.

My Project

Finding ways to engage students in technical STEM content is critical to preparing students for the world of tomorrow. Five years ago, a partner teacher and myself, created one of the most engaging projects of my career. Our project was to engage students in the refurbishment of arcade crane machines. Students learned about electronics, tools, digital design, and safety while bringing an arcade crane machine back to life.

Engaging students through the repair and redesign of crane machines, is an experience that gives relevance to the applications of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math).

Unfortunately, one of the original 2 crane machines refurbished by students, is in need of new parts. I need this crane machine kit so that I can continue having students break down, repair, and redesign elements of the crane machine. After repairing the machine, students use digital design to add custom flair to the arcade cabinet. Finally, we distribute play tokens to the student body as an incentive for positive behavior.

I desperately need your help to purchase this crane machine kit so that I can continue benefitting students for many years.
