This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from loving, involved families in Pontiac, Michigan. Currently, 100% of them qualify for free or reduced price lunch. I joined our school in November of 2018 and I am honored to be working in a school that puts kids first and trusts teachers to do what's best for their individual students.
It is very important for me for my students to feel safe and secure in my classroom as well as at school and in their surrounding community.
Part of felt safety includes feeling like they belong, and as though their contributions help to mold and create our classroom community. Every student is an asset; their knowledge and lived experiences are resources that I draw from daily.
My Project
While our school’s academic goals are first and foremost, I want to also give my class the opportunity for creativity and crafting. We will not have an art teacher this year (as of now), so I want to infuse art into the classroom.
Young children need the opportunity for sensory exploration of materials.
These supplies would provide endless possibilities! Many of our lessons (for math, for example, but also for writing) call for materials such as beads, pipe cleaners, Pom poms, and other materials that the classroom does not currently have. I would love to have this area covered so I can focus on delivering the best possible instruction without worrying where these supplementals will be coming from.
