My students need creative art engineering supplies so they can work with diverse materials and make things during the lunch period at our middle school instead of constantly checking their cellphones.

My Students

My students come from all neighborhoods in our diverse city. We are a large comprehensive Title 1 middle school. My students speak Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, Samoan, Korean, Japanese, Danish, Vietnamese, Portuguese, Urdu and Arabic. They are eager to learn, create, design and be part of a learning lab we call Middle School! The Library is being transformed into a Learning Commons and our student lunch period is a wild time for exploration at the maker space tables. I have hundreds of students vying to get into the library during lunch because they can do things with their minds, hearts and hands. It is a vibrant, cooperative, and, dynamic space that we cherish.

My Project

Pop culture is drawing young people to their cell phones to the extent of isolation, state of worry, and lessening chances to be social. Our motto in our library learning commons is "Make" "Create" "Invent" "Innovate" and "Design".

By allowing our "tweens" to mess around with a variety of materials gives them the confidence to try new things, make mistakes, and work with different mediums and tools.

It's amazing how students work with one another across age, cultural backgrounds and income when we have these exciting maker tables set up for them during their lunch period and after school. Students become more social, complement each other, share ideas, contribute to each other's successes. Students are friendlier with each other when working on making and designing.

With the funding of this grant, the students will use the specialty oven

and specialty clay and accessories so that they can make jewelry and other fun items like planters for air plants or small sculptures. Our students will design fun buttons, jewelry and ornaments with the shrinky dinks and perler beads. The bookmaking items and adhesives will help students enter a bookmaking contest. The paints and stencils will enhance literacy by painting their posters, the book cart with famous quotes or salt dough creations and ornaments. The block printing ink and fabric crayons will help students make small posters, cards, t-shirts and sock puppets.

The synthesis of science, math, art, literacy, language and, writing all happen when students are free to explore. There's no place quite like this at our school.

They can't wait for the chance to create.
