This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Next September, I will have 20 eager third graders in my classroom. Our school is located in an urban setting and is comprised of approximately 65% second language leaners of English. Most students who are learning English are from El Salvador, Colombia, and Peru. 99% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Despite challenges of poverty and language, my third graders are eager learners.

This project will help them become more proficient students who are ready to provide for their future.

My Project

I have had the opportunity to be trained in a special method, called Pretexts, of getting students engaged in a close reading of a text. Pretexts uses the arts, drawing, painting, drama, etc.. to encourage students to go back to the text without realizing how hard they are working!

We need art materials to help us close read texts.

Materials such as watercolors, paintbrushes, foam shapes, craft sticks and craft stems will help us build understanding of the text while we listen to it being read aloud by the teacher. Then, the students engage in rereading, discussions, and providing evidence for their points. It's a fun, engaging, and expressive way to read a text closely!
