Crafting Joy for the Holidays, With No Bake Cookie Houses!
Help me give my students pure joy, with graham crackers, candy, and meringue powder for making royal icing, and for building and decorating a no-bake candy cottage, chalet, castle or bungalow, whatever their inner architects dream up!

My Project
My Design Crafts curriculum was created for the middle schooler who dislikes art! It's full of fun, hands-on projects that offer opportunities to work together and collaborate, to build and get creative with a variety of materials-like yarn, branches, papier mâché and duct tape. My students are from our gifted magnet, our regular school, our English as a Second Language program, and our special education program, all with different needs, challenges, and strengths. Yet through each project we explore, they share in the discovery and magic of making something useful or beautiful with their own hands.
One of the most exciting Design Crafts projects happens at the end of the Fall semester, when my students team up with classmates to build a no bake Cookie house– one of the most challenging projects of the year– and one that takes some real engineering skills!
My students begin with inspiration, researching different styles of architecture, then craft a prototype model out of recycled cards and glue. Then onto the most anticipated part, crafting their vision out of cookies and candy!
Making a house with all edible materials takes willpower and patience. Students learn to cut their fragile graham crackers carefully with butter knives to create walls of different sizes, eaves and pointed roofs, and practice restraint to not eat their project before it's done! They learn to operate our "professional" class mixer, whipping up multiple batches of royal icing made from meringue powder, the important "glue" that will turn their cracker shapes into upright structures, or creates snowy icicles on the roofs! The final step, and which is perhaps the most fun for students, is when they embellish their creation with candy in all colors and shapes, designating doorways and windows, marking pathways, and most importantly, making memories that last forever!
