Help me give my students the opportunity to give back. We are looking for fabric, yarn and supplies to make NICU bonding hearts, blankets and hats to help our community's smallest members.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Each year our "Confidence Club" shifts gears and works towards a community service project. Sometimes the community we reach is our own but we have even reached out across the world.
This year we would like to focus on the smallest members of a community and craft fabric bonding hearts for parents and their children who are patients in the NICU.
These fabric hearts are given to NICU parents to wear next to their skin, absorbing their scents. The hearts are then taken to the NICU and placed next to their child where they can be soothed by the parent's scent and aid in bonding, even when parent cannot be at the bedside.
We would also like to crochet/knit blankets and hats to be used not only by NICU patients but by hospital patients in general.
In years past we have crafted pins, headbands, keychains, stuffed animals and more to raise money for UNICEF (earmarked to send to children affected by the war in Ukraine) and a local charity The Hance Family Foundation who provided self-esteem and confidence outreach to girls of all ages in memory of their daughters.
Another project we did was send crocheted hearts and flowers to be passed out in the community of Uvalde, Texas to help bring a smile to the town after tragedy struck.
