This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This fall, I started a special project with my 5th grade counseling group creating “Chunky Blankets” through finger knitting. These blankets had the incredible ability to bring therapeutic advantages to my students and a fun way of bonding with each other.

Yarn, a seemingly simple material, is an expense that is out of reach for many of my students.

Despite my personal dedication to funding this project, the cost is too high for me to continue. Your support can make this project a reality and help me to expand its reach and help make a lasting impact on my students.

My goal is to provide every 3rd-5th grade student in my school interested in participating with the yarn they need to craft not one but two Chunky Blankets. The first, a cozy creation for themselves.They will learn the therapeutic advantages of finger knitting, such as focus, patience and a valuable life skill. The second blanket is their selfless act of giving back. By creating an additional blanket to donate, students extend the warmth and kindness they've received from others.

My students are remarkable! They are resilient, creative, compassionate, sweet little souls who face varied economic challenges and cognitive abilities. The advantage of finger knitting is the accessibility. The method ensures that all students, regardless of skill level, can actively participate. It becomes a unifying experience, fostering a sense of community and togetherness among my diverse group of learners.
