Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have come from many different parts of the world including Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and the United States. They come with tenacity, creativity and a wide variety of experiences and gifts. We work hard everyday as scholars, artists, critical thinkers and friends.

At our school, ninety-six percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and ninety-two percent of the students are students of color.

The majority of my students are learning English as a second or third language. These students have the capacity to achieve greatness.

My Project

My students need the opportunity of learning through multiple modalities. With a variety of art supplies such as beads, glitter and colored pencils, they will be able to expand on the learning that we do in class and deepen their thinking.

I teach in a Performance Arts Magnet school where art is part of our scholars' DNA. My students will use the beading materials during Indoor Recess (brrr, Minnesota winter) and during our Friday Enrichment time. We'll use the glitter sticker art, paint-by-sticker books and the flip books to build our classroom community. Time spent working on art projects is important to our collective experiences.

Art is often the most effective way for my students who speak other languages in their homes (English Language Learners), to express their opinions and abilities. Thank you so much for giving us this opportunity!
