Craft Club Fun Includes Everyone

My Project

I would like to give middle school students the opportunity to collaborate and create through creating handicrafts during a lunchtime craft club. The opportunity to produce something they created from their own imaginations will give students a sense of confidence and pride. Engaging in creating handicrafts with their peers teaches students that there are multiple ways of completing the same task.

We live in a world of instant gratification, but we know not everything can happen instantly.

When kids craft, they may need to wait for things to dry or set before moving on to the next step. Even following verbal directions helps students understand that a craft may take more than one session to complete.

Crafting helps kids understand that it’s okay to make a mistake and to first look for a creative solution rather than immediately getting frustrated.

I am requesting a button maker, slime kits, keychain kits, beads, and a variety of other craft supplies to encourage creativity, inspire imagination, and practice motor skills, something I see my students struggle with as a result of being isolated during the Covid-19 pandemic and after the Lahaina fires.

These supplies will be used in monthly lunchtime sessions where students of all ages and abilities will be invited to my science classroom to spend a "Crafternoon" of fun. I provide instructions and supplies for a craft while students supply their imagination as they talk face-to-face with their peers (not text or message on devices). This will give students a chance to experiment with supplies they might not have access to otherwise like the most expensive item I am requesting, a button maker, to help them express their interests and ideas. Students will develop friendships, build motor skills, and most importantly, have fun!
