Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The goal of this project is to give my third grade bilingual class a chance to visit Crab Cove Marine Reserve in Alameda, California. Crab Cove preserves a half-mile stretch of mudflat and rocky shore and has a wide variety of protected animals for students to observe. In addition, students will be guided through the visitor center, which houses rare and endangered bay area fish in a large saltwater aquarium. This project will facilitate a month-long scientific inquiry and writing project about ocean life and aquatic environments. A naturalist will orient students to Bay ecology, the inter-tidal zone, sharks, whales, shorebirds, and many other fascinating subjects. Most of the students at John Muir receive free and reduced breakfast and lunch. This statistic indicates that the families in our community are socio-economically disadvantaged and struggle to meet basic human needs. These economic stresses make it difficult for families to provide enrichment activities such as travel to national parks, museums and aquariums. As students progress through their science, social studies and language arts educations their access to the background knowledge necessary for concept development is limited. The allocation of this grant will provide my students with a learning opportunity that will close the achievement gap between students who have access to enrichment experiences, and those who do not. Furthermore, this project will give my students the chance to internalize respect for the environment and support the environmental messages that underscore the science curriculum I deliver each day. In essence, supporting this project will drive home the immediacy of the need for action with regards to our precious natural environment. As this group of 80 third graders comes of age, perhaps memories of their visit to the nature preserve will help them to make consumer choices that preserve instead of destroy our world. While entrance to the museum is free, I am asking for your help in covering the cost of the bus to get us there to make this experience possible for my students. Thank you!
