Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My seventh grade class consists of sixty-five students. Many of these students are fighting an uphill battle in becoming lifelong readers. For example, ninety-seven percent of the students are from low-income families, which means the extra money needed for books at home is - more often than not - out of the question. Neighboring gangs exist in the shadows of our school. This negativity is unfortunately a part of my students’ daily lives. Additionally, thirty-five percent of our students are considered English Language Learners, with parents who speak no or very little English, yet another limiting factor to having access to books. However, I am inspired daily by the resilience they show in the face of these challenges.
My Project
I have often thought of what an onlooker might think as they watched my class transform during reading time. I, who am lucky enough to watch this scene unfold each day, will still once in a while find myself momentarily paused in amazement. For twenty minutes each class period, my chatty, vivacious, opinionated, dramatic (and sometimes fidgety) 7th graders are engulfed in a quiet calm.
A calm that is palpable as the students stretch out on the carpet or lean against the wall, books in hand settling down for a read.
It is the best part of the day. I want each of my students to find a cozy spot to curl up with their book each day, so that they can quickly become immersed in their reading and reap the benefits of a daily reading habit. Unfortunately, our old building furniture does little to entice our young readers to get cozy. It is up to us to provide students with rockers and comfy backrests so students can enjoy their reading time. The more students enjoy reading the more they will read!
