This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every teacher dreams of their students becoming proficient readers by the end of the school year, and I am no exception.
My school is located in a working-class, inner-city neighborhood of Los Angeles and many of my students come from low-income households.
Many of my students have parents who work multiple jobs and struggle to meet the everyday needs of their children, such as providing regular meals or a consistent bedtime. Many struggle simply to help their children with completing daily homework assignments. Yet, the children are eager to learn and come to school every day with positive attitudes, ready to build on the knowledge they have gained over time.
My Project
Just as adults have their spots around the house they prefer to read in, such as the couch or sitting on an outdoor deck, children also have special areas they feel more comfortable reading in. With these new materials, my students will be able to have more choices for places to read, such as being able to grab a small circle mat one day or cozying up with a big pillow another day.
This year, I would like to begin a Reading Workshop, where students will have more time to independently read, and with this new rug and mini-carpets, they will definitely feel more comfortable and be able to spend longer time reading.
Ideally, with more time spent reading in class, these children will be come stronger, more confident readers by the of the school year.
