This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I middle school in which the majority of our students live in poverty. Many students are bilingual and come from immigrant families, so they are learning the skills required to be literate in a global society. Although this is my fifth year working in the community, this is my first year in my new school.
My students deserve access to technology that will prepare them for college and the workforce.
Many of my students are more confident typing on a cell phone than on a computer, and access to devices in my school is limited. Any and all support is thoroughly appreciated!
My Project
I am fortunate to work in a school that serves students in pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. My seventh and eighth graders are experts in our school community. They have grown here, and are starting to consider the transition to high school. Our school is an excellent community, but we’re still lagging in access to technology.
Providing them with a Chromebook station will support my students as we roll out Google Classroom in our school.
This is a platform commonly used across New York City, and it will help prepare them for high school. Not only will I teach them to use Google Docs, but I plan to integrate other 21st century communication skills such as email communication, research, slides, and sheets. Students will be able to share their writing with a wider audience and build a digital portfolio of their work that they can bring with them beyond middle school.
