My Project

For my project I am looking to create a cozier library area where my 5th graders can be comfortable while nurturing their love of reading. I currently have a dedicated library space and plenty of books, however my shelves are not incredibly sturdy and my space lacks the cozy elements to help the students relax and read comfortably.

I would like a sturdier shelf that is lower to the ground so I can display more books.

Our district is home to one of the most diverse populations in the country with over 90 different home countries and 100+ languages spoken. To celebrate our diversity we work to create a culture of acceptance and inclusive environments. We work hard to acknowledge the various holidays represented using various books. I have included some items that will help me to display these books during various holidays after we read them as a class.

Because I teach 5th grade things like area rugs and cushions are not something we are typically provided. I am also asking for a few lamps for the space so I don't have to use my overhead (florescent) lighting. In my district, 5th grade is considered the last year of elementary school. Even though they are "bigger kids", my students still love the small touches that make the classroom feel comfortable and safe. My goal is to always provide a welcoming classroom where my kids feel at home. Adding these simple touches will help to make my library area a space where the students want to be.
