Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first graders are creative, thoughtful, and inquisitive. My school is extremely diverse and is the place of learning for many different cultures and backgrounds. My students are exposed many different cultures when they come on campus which teaches them about diversity and community. It is an incredible place to teach, learn, and thrive. Many of my students come from low-income homes, and most receive free or reduced-price lunch.
The tiny humans I'm lucky enough to have in my class are bright, resourceful, and compassionate, and they are going to change the world.
These young learners inspire to me to be a better teacher and person. A lot of my students don't typically have the emotional or educational support they need at home. Many of their hardworking parents work multiple jobs, and my students often go home to take care of themselves.
This is why my goal always has been and always will be to create a happy, positive learning environment for my students. If school is the only bright spot of their day, I am going to do everything I can to make their day shine brighter than the sun!
My Project
First grade is such a special age. My students are full of wonder and excitement, and, best of all, they are extremely eager to start reading. Most of my students are emerging readers, so they often come to 1st grade only knowing their letters and corresponding sounds. It is incredible to watch them grow into proficient readers throughout the school year. They truly transform before my eyes.
Giving my students a cozy reading nook will give them a special place in the classroom to fall in love with reading and explore new places, people, and ideas through the magic of books.
I will use the comfy couch and book organizer to create a tiny piece of home in my classroom where students can explore books, read independently, and get lost in the joy of reading. With the book shelves and cozy sitting spots, the space can be used in many ways like reading, working collaboratively, and doing listening and speaking activities during literacy centers.
I know my students' faces would light up as soon as they laid their eyes on this cozy library nook. As a first grade teacher, it is my goal to teach my students not only to read, but to become readers who use books to research, explore, discover, and become lifelong learners.
