My Project

This project will help me create a reading nook in my classroom, a place where students can relax, lounge, and enjoy books of all genres.

Having a beautiful, comfortable spot for leisure reading helps students capture their imaginations and dive into great books.

Research* shows that reading for pleasure is time well spent! Students who read for pleasure:

1. Build empathy

2. Learn reading skills that transfer to other content areas

3. Connect characters and themes to their own lives

4. MUCH MORE!

Think of the last time you read a book for pleasure? Did you do it behind a desk in a classroom chair? No way! You chose your most comfy spot, you disconnected from distraction, and you dove into your imagination! The same is true for students - they need a proper environment for leisure reading!

The notion of comfort in the classroom isn't new, and research** supports the idea that cozy classrooms support student creativity, thinking, and learning. It even has a name - The Living Room Effect.

My vision is to appropriate a part of my classroom for a comfortable, calm, relaxing reading zone. I plan to use an area rug to set a base, then add in poufs, pillows, throws, and chairs to create The Living Room Effect. I can picture students selecting a favorite chair and plunking down with an award winner. I can see friends resting back-to-back sharing one of the poufs funded by this project, each flipping pages on a self-selected novel. I can envision teens sprawled across the area rug, legs swinging as the devour a good read. The

Having a relaxing location to read this books encourages students to look forward to reading opportunities! As in real estate, location matters!
