Cozy Reading Corner

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading fluently is a critical skill in second grade. A love for reading is a gift for a lifetime. We have SSR time for 15 minutes daily allowing students to read whatever book they want. Students often find a quiet place in the corner on the floor to enjoy their favorite book.

I work at an improvement school in the high desert.

We have a high population of low socioeconomic students. We serve numerous foster families. Many do not have the luxury of a library at home. The classroom library is often the only place students can enjoy books.

My Project

During SSR and free time, students can enjoy a book with reading buddies or by themselves in a comfortable beanbag chair rather than the floor on a daily basis. When students have a comfortable setting to enjoy a book for pleasure, students are given an opportunity to develop a lifelong love of reading. There is no pressure or expectations, just an opportunity to practice reading with books they love in a safe, cozy environment.

Many of my students are struggling readers.

They are often discouraged when it comes to reading in the classroom. SSR is the time when even those that struggle enjoy reading on the carpet or at their desks. These new beanbag seats can make the experience even more enjoyable.
