My Students

Hi there! I am a first-year special education teacher. I teach grade levels kindergarten through 4th grade, and all of my students have special needs. I pull each child out of their regular education classroom for 45 minutes each day for their intervention time which includes math, reading, social skills, etc.

I have the most amazing group of kids that come ready to work in my room each day.

My room is a safe space for them to learn, and to never feel judged based on what may be challenging for them in their academics. Although I have only been with these students for such a short period, I have seen much growth from each of them! Although, some days are harder than others. Most of my students do not have the ideal home-life that a person may imagine. They deal with things at home that I could have never imagined even thinking about when I was a child, much less having to worry about the problems that they take on at such a young age. This is why I want my classroom to be somewhere they can enjoy spending time at!

My Project

My kids learn more effectively if they are comfortable! I know it sounds crazy, but it is very true. I have made our classroom very bright and colorful because I know that is what my kids respond best to. They enjoy decorations and flexible seating. It is their safe place! It is somewhere they can let go and learn at the same time.

If my kids are comfortable, they are learning!

My students have always mentioned having a rug and I knew that this fuzzy rug would be a hit. A few of them need sensory items such as a fuzzy surface to keep their hands moving whether we are reading or working on math. We spend a lot of time on the floor with pillows because they are just able to focus more than they would in a regular wooden desk. The wiggle stool is also something that we have wanted for a long time. This flexible seating gives them movement while they are learning without them even knowing it. If they can move, their brain latches on to what they are learning! This is how my kids operate and how they are successful! The Dr. Seuss rug is something I can put at the door as a reminder to them each and every day that there is no one like them, and to never change who they are! I love these kids more than I could explain and I know they would absolutely love these materials.
