My Students

My students are in an urban vocational high school. They range in ability levels, language fluency, and unique learning needs. My school offers different pathways for students that include: welding, automotive, diesel, building construction, CNC machine operating, and CADD. My students are hardworking, kind, and motivated to seek employment during and after high school in their chosen field of study.

Being a teenager comes with its own sets of challenges, but my students face so many more obstacles than that.

Many of the students I teach come from difficult home situations and financial hardships, all while trying to obtain and complete internships at shops in their trades. They have overcome many challenges. Despite these obstacles, they are a joy to teach and I couldn't ask for a better group of students.

My Project

Learning a foreign language and culture is no easy task. It's even more difficult for my English Language Learners who have special needs, anxiety, and difficulty focusing. Some of my students who exhibit hyperactivity are dismissed as being poorly behaved, while some with anxiety are believed to be antisocial. These behaviors are obstacles that we can help them overcome, but they do not define my students. My students are energetic, smart, funny, and kind. They try their best each and every day, because they truly want to learn and thrive!

I want to help these exceptional students by providing them with more comfortable seating options in the classroom that can improve focus, thus improve their learning.

We currently have a few wobble stools in the classroom and they are amazing for my students! These bean bag and saucer chairs will add flexible seating for those students who do not necessarily need to stay in motion or seek out kinesthetic outputs. These seats will be specifically geared towards those who seek comfort and soothing, especially those with anxiety. I have also requested some lap desks for these students to use while in these chairs to provide a comfortable and adjustable desktop.

These items will help soothe anxiety and make my classroom a comfortable place for my most challenged students--a place where they can learn while still being themselves. Thank you so much for considering my project. Students with special needs truly deserve special tools and strategies that meet their individual learning needs.
