My high school students love to have fun, they are in an exciting and highly successful program that prepares high school youth with the skills, knowledge, and abilities for the workplace of the 21st Century. J4NG youth have an average of six barriers (academic, familial, environmental) that impede progress in school and in life.
When talking to the students about what they wish we had in our classroom, they mentioned a cozy corner.
A cozy corner is an area in your learning space that is dedicated to providing students with solitude and relaxation to take breaks from the noise and high activity levels of the classroom. This area will allow students to have a space to have a mental break and step away from the hard desk. The discussion quickly turned to how uncomfortable it was sitting on the hard, portable floor. However, imagine how inviting bean bags would be for curling up with a book in solitude! My students don't want to spend more time at their desks. Currently, we lack cozy spots. If I address this seating issue with bean bags, students will flock to the comfy corner! Teachers have been adapting their classroom environment to meet the needs of different learning activities. Reading, for example, can benefit from a different setup to the traditional desk and chair. Bean bags offered comfort and relaxation for pupils that no other structured furniture could provide; increasing comfort, improving concentration, and elongating time spent reading.
