Cozy Corner

My Students

My community is small and there are very few resources for families in the area. The children have limited access to medical services and even less to mental health services. Our students come from homes that are split, parents in jail, drugs and that are only naming a few issues. There are students who come with so much fear and stress in their little bodies there is no way they are ready to learn.

As a counselor, those students come to me for support and help.

I want to provide a warm safe area for the students to come and feel relaxed and safe so they can explore and express their feelings and fears so I can help guide them and get them more ready to learn. My students need more social, emotional and character education to help them be successful!

My Project

The carpet will be used to define a safe area for kids to go to decompress when needed. It gives the students an area to go for a short time out so they can come back to the classroom ready to learn. My focus is to provide the students with a cozy safe zone and teach them when to use it to redirect feelings and emotions so they will decrease their negative and disruptive behavior in the classroom. The other ideas are sensory items the kids can explore as they work on breathing exercises and regroup before returning to the academic setting. Even as adults there are times we all need a safe, quiet and secure area to decompress.
