Our school district is in a low income/high poverty area with students who have overcome many challenges both within the classroom and out in the community. As the School Counselor, I work with all students within our elementary school whether it is the whole class, individuals, or small groups.
Many of my students come to my room as a safe place for them to talk about what is going on in their lives, both in school and at home.
They are able to talk openly with me and be honest about what is going on and the struggles that they are facing in the classroom.
Many of the students I work with need a little bit of time to get back to their enthusiastic and energetic selves when upset. I want to provide a place for my students to regroup and talk so that they are able to get back to their classroom and be fully engaged in their academics.
My Project
I want to create an area for students to come to that feels safe and inviting. A place that they can let their feelings out and express their concerns. This dedicated area will promote a therapeutic environment and allow me to make better connections with my students.
These items are a perfect accommodation for the range of students that I work with.
Students will be able to utilize the cozy corner on a daily basis to talk with me or regroup before going back to class. A bean bag will be the perfect seating for kids to get cozy in and relax. Students love the mermaid pillow and these can be a starting point for students to open up with by drawing words or pictures with the sequence. The rug and lamp will tie everything together and be the perfect place to journal.
