Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is an amazing community of international learners where cultural and linguistic diversity is celebrated. We are a dual language school dedicated to helping all students become bilingual and biliterate. Research shows that students who grow up bilingual have a better ability to pay attention in school, exhibit reduced levels of loneliness, anxiety, and low self-esteem, and are more likely to avoid memory loss as they age.

Although our program provides official instruction in English and Spanish, my students and their families speak over 10 different languages.

I strive to highlight their home languages as unique assets and honor their identities as emerging multilinguals.

Unfortunately, our community has been under-served for many years and over 3/4 of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch at school. I do not want my bright and capable students to miss out on all the amazing resources and learning available to those who happened to be born in wealthier zip codes. Help me give them every advantage so that they can succeed!

My Project

First grade is a crucial year for learning to read and write. In order for my students to do their best learning, they need comfortable seating options. Research shows that when students are given the opportunity to make their own choices, they are more engaged and focused.

Considering the varied behavioral and cognitive needs of my students, I want to provide bean bag chairs, reclining seats, and wiggle stools-- in addition to standard classroom chairs-- so that students can choose the best option for their learning.

Students will use these flexible seating options to do independent and partner reading and writing. These seating choices are flexible because they can easily be moved to a table or used on the floor with clipboards as an alternative writing surface. In this way, every student will feel empowered to take responsibility for their own learning.

Finally, I want to cover the fluorescent lights in my classroom with colorful light filters. Many students, but especially those with sensory processing challenges, find fluorescent lights difficult because of the harshness of the light. Softening the light with a calming blue tone is another way to make the learning environment more amenable and comfortable for all my learners.
