Hello! I teach a self contained Third Grade class. Our school is located less than one hour outside the New Orleans area. Therefore, we have many displaced students at our school. In addition, many of my students have or had family members living with them due to Hurricane Katrina. Our rural community is in the process of getting 400 FEMA trailers, so the amount of displaced students is on the rise and will continue to rise through the next school year. In addition, 65% of our students are at the poverty level. Emotionally, the students at our school have been through a lot this year. Some had their homes destroyed, and they no longer live in the same community. To help my students deal with their emotions, I would like to create a cozy classroom. Having a nice rug where the students can relax and read a book, or listen to me read a book will help create this atmosphere. The rug will especially benefit the students who are living in a FEMA trailer, where they have no room or personal space! Moreover, due to the increase of students in our area, the student per teacher ratio is on the rise. Having this carpet will designate a reading area in my classroom where my students can go and relax while reading.
