My students need 2 bookcases to store the books we have been collecting for our classroom library and a rug for a comfy place to relax and independently read.
C. Dominguez wrote "To build up a library is to create a life. It’s never just a random collection of books." My students need the foundation of this library. We have been collecting books, now we need a place to store and read them! Our book nook is a comfy place for conversation and inspiration.
My school is a K-6 elementary building in a rural area.
Our town library is fairly small, so students rely on our classroom and school library for reading. We have been working hard to gather books that are age appropriate for sixth graders, and are exciting for them to read. Our classroom community has shared books, and I am eager to make the book nook area more inviting to students.
My Project
My goal is to create a cozy book nook in my classroom that is inviting for students when we have independent or group reading. Most of our current books are in crates, and it is difficult to find books because they are not organized or displayed well. With the addition of two book cases, books can become more accessible to students, and will be better taken care of. An inviting rug will define the space, and provide students with a comfortable sitting area when they comfort as discuss books or read independently.
Having an organized space for reading in the classroom provides my students with a sense of control and ownership.
It gives them responsibility over classroom materials, and provides an area where they can sit comfortably and discuss what they are reading. Having accessible shelves for storage allows students to find books more quickly, and will free up floor space for other classroom activities.
