I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. Our elementary students have many challenges in and out of the classroom. Many of the students receive a free breakfast and lunch due to their socioeconomic status. These challenges can hold students back so I do whatever I can to give them every advantage I can. I am looking to provide my students with meaningful learning expieriences. In this class, we build a community around what we have in common and our shared experiences.
The classroom carpet is a common meeting place for all my students. We start each day meeting together! Stories are shared. Concepts are introduced and practiced. Thinking and sharing happens. We can gather around something new and explore it together. It's that one special place where everyone feels welcome and everyone knows that something new and exciting is about to take place. The carpet is a home inside of the classroom, fostering learning and creativity. Community is so critical in developing confident, capable learners. By having a classroom carpet, the students will have a chance to get out of their chairs and come together to learn up close and together!
