My students need a cozy, durable rug that meets the federal fire code requirement and keeps us warm when the cold winds blow in Massachusetts.

My Students
Help us to meet altogether on a cozy rug that fits all of our bottoms as we sit like pretzels to listen to a story or learn a new skill. It gives partners a place to sprawl out when finding all the combinations of a number, reading about far away places, writing a play, illustrating a poem, etc.
We are a public school that has suffered from the severe budget cuts our district is experiencing.
We are a class of 22 1st graders with mixed academic and social skills. Our drafty 100 year old school is located in a New England urban neighborhood. These students work best in a setting that is both welcoming and easy to access. We spend large amounts of time doing academic work while on the floor. This allows these young students the freedom to move and engage in their work without the constriction of their chair and desk.
We had to throw away our old rug because it did not meet the federal fire code regulation. We are working on the bare, cold floor and the floor is feeling colder as it is now December.
My Project
Currently, students sit inside the perimeter that is blue painter's tape; they sit on the smooth floor and slide around easily. A rug will provide comfort, friction:) and warmth.
The rug that I have chosen is a world map that brightly depicts each continent and the oceans. This rug will provide the students who are from other parts of the world with a prop to see where they are from and to talk more easily about themselves.
We can also use it for geography/social studies throughout the year. This simple map will serve these young students as a representation of their world. The students will be able to have kinesthetic opportunities to learn where places are as we are learning about them.
A world rug that meets the federal fire code regulation would provide a large, warm educational space for the whole class to have our whole class meetings, to easily see or refer to places as we learn about them, to provide an aesthetic setting for students to do small group work as well.
The classroom rug provides another surface for students to use throughout the day. The rug provides a defined, child centered learning space.
